Answer

Some children appear to sleep more during periods of rapid growth, increased physical activity or recovery from illness. However, there is no fixed amount of extra sleep required during every growth spurt. Appetite changes, tiredness and temporary increases in sleep can be normal. The best approach is to maintain an age-appropriate schedule while allowing an earlier bedtime or occasional extra rest if the child seems genuinely tired. Avoid assuming that every episode of fatigue is caused by growth. Persistent exhaustion, unusual weakness, significant behavior changes or excessive sleeping may have another explanation. Pay attention to the child's overall health and daytime functioning. Contact a pediatrician if increased sleepiness continues, interferes with normal activities or occurs with other concerning symptoms.
